Serious Simulations Wins Subcontract from FAAC Incorporated to Support the U.S. Army’s Virtual Clearance Training System (VCTS)
ORLANDO, Fla. USA — Serious Simulations LLC has begun work for FAAC Incorporated, the prime contractor for the U.S. Army’s Virtual Clearance Training System (VCTS). The subcontract was awarded as part of an overall upgrade package to the Army’s VCTS program being executed by FAAC. The VCTS program is administered by the Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training, and Instrumentation (PEOSTRI) based in the Central Florida Research Park in Orlando.
Serious Simulations will provide a unique gun tracking solution to the fleet of simulators in the VCTS program. Specifically, the company developed a Zero Drift Machine Gun tracking system to enable machine gunnery tasks to be executed with extremely high degrees of accuracy and zero drift. Drift is when the virtual machine gun begins to move itself, or “drift,” virtually, without any physical movement or stimulus from the user. It necessitates recalibrations during training interrupting the trainee attention. The drift issue is common in simulators and is caused by a number of sensor technology and environmental conditions.
“We were pleased to provide the Army with a solid and innovative solution for a vexing problem so soldiers will be uninterrupted by simulator drift issues and can be more fully immersed in their combat training,” said Christopher Chambers, a former Army officer and CEO of Serious Simulations.
The solution is a unique innovation by Serious Simulations and FAAC Incorporated, using industrial grade optical encoders, engaged by a series of gears to track machine gun movements and send the data into the virtual simulation. Because the system requires physical movement to initiate the sensors, virtual drift is eliminated. The encoders measure gun movement to an accuracy of less than 1/100th of a degree, even exceeding the accuracy of the gun itself.
Serious Simulations provides innovative solutions to improve realism in simulators. The company has built a large portfolio of innovations and inventions for individual and group simulation including its first product – an Infantry simulation system branded ready2trainTM. It currently holds a portfolio of five patents in simulation and Virtual Reality technologies. The newest products address the vital area of zero latency wireless video transmission for Virtual and Augmented Reality displays and are intended for both professional training and entertainment applications. The patented wireless devices are already being embedded in the Helment-Mounted-Displays of four manufacturers.
Serious Simulations is a client company of the University of Central Florida Business Incubation Program located at Central Florida Research Park in East Orange County.
