Orlando Veteran-Led Technology Company Seeks to Remove Barriers to Rehabilitation for America’s Veterans

Veteran-led healthcare technology company says reducing administrative and clinical barriers—not simply developing better technology—is the key to helping veterans receive the rehabilitation and mobility care they deserve.

 

ORLANDO, Fla. — For thousands of veterans recovering from service-related injuries, the greatest challenge isn’t finding clinicians capable of providing exceptional rehabilitation – it’s overcoming the administrative, clinical, and operational obstacles that can delay or complicate access to care.

Orlando-based M3D Technologies, a service-disabled veteran-owned business founded by U.S. Navy veteran Matthew Hogan, believes those barriers can and should be eliminated. Rather than focusing solely on developing new technology, the company’s mission is to equip prosthetic and orthotic (P&O) providers and physical therapy clinics with objective tools that help simplify clinical decision-making, strengthen documentation, and reduce obstacles that can stand between patients and the treatment they need.

For Hogan, that mission is deeply personal.

After sustaining injuries during his military service, Hogan experienced firsthand the complexities of navigating rehabilitation and recognized that many of the same challenges confronting patients also burden healthcare providers. He concluded that improving patient outcomes required more than better clinical technology – it required addressing the systemic hurdles that affect every stage of the rehabilitation process.

That vision became MERGE, M3D’s proprietary markerless motion analysis platform. Unlike conventional motion capture systems that rely on wearable suits, sensors, reflective markers, or other specialized equipment, MERGE captures highly accurate human movement data using only cameras and proprietary computer vision software.

Veterans often require prosthetic, orthotic, and physical therapy services at higher rates than the general population because of service-related injuries and limb loss. At the same time, providers face increasing demands to document medical necessity, demonstrate functional improvement, and navigate complex reimbursement requirements. M3D believes objective movement data can help providers document patient function more effectively, support evidence-based treatment decisions, and reduce delays that may prevent patients from receiving timely care.

“Veterans shouldn’t have to fight another battle after returning home simply to receive the rehabilitation they’ve earned,” Hogan said. “Our mission has never been to build technology for technology’s sake. It’s to remove barriers that prevent providers from delivering the best possible care so patients—especially veterans—can focus on recovery.”

MERGE also incorporates augmented reality therapy experiences designed to increase patient engagement throughout rehabilitation. By making therapy more interactive and measurable, M3D hopes to encourage greater adherence to prescribed treatment plans, helping patients remain engaged through completion of their recovery programs.

Since transitioning from research and development into commercialization, M3D has rapidly expanded its presence across Florida. Within the past year, the company has been selected to deploy their systems at Patrick Space Force Base, Orlando International Airport (MCO), the Orange County Multicultural Center, and the International Institute of Orthotics and Prosthetics.

While those milestones demonstrate growing confidence in the technology, Hogan says commercial success is not the company’s primary measure of impact.

“If we can help providers spend less time overcoming administrative barriers and more time treating patients, we’ve succeeded,” Hogan said. “Every improvement that helps a clinic deliver care more efficiently creates another opportunity for a veteran to receive the treatment they need and deserve.”
