The ranking is determined by a number of factors, including annual recurring revenues, profitability, growth rate, cyber professional headcount, managed security services, and third-party industry honors (e.g., Gartner, Forrester, IDC). In its fifth year, the report tracks the ongoing growth and evolution of managed security services.

  • The MSSP’s financial performance and growth: The average MSSP expects revenue to increase by 16% for 2021 from $19.2 million in 2020, reaching $22.3 million.
  • Security Operations Centers (SOC): SOCs are primarily managed in-house for 70% of businesses, hybrid SOCs are for 19%, and they are totally outsourced for 8%.
  • New Managed Cybersecurity Services: The list of managed security services has grown to incorporate capabilities such as MDR (91%) or SOC as a service (76%), XDR (67%), cyber talent as a service (43%), and cloud security posture management (41%).
  • Trends in Cyberattacks:As of 2021, vulnerability exploits were the most common attack type seen against MSSP customers (87%), followed by phishing (96%) and ransomware (89%).
  • Cybersecurity Solutions:According to the survey, there are 130 different hardware, software, cloud, and service vendors that assist MSSPs with their cybersecurity efforts, further proving the fragmentation of the market.
